They look detailed and high-end, but thanks to a simple technique—piping the eye and nose accents directly into the mold first—you get crisp, high-contrast skulls every single time without messy hand-painting later.

Step-by-Step Tutorial

Step 1: Accent the Eyes & Nose First

  1. Melt your dark chocolate or black candy melts in the microwave in 15-second bursts, stirring between each until smooth.
  2. Transfer to a small piping bag. Pipe a small amount directly into the recessed eye sockets, nose cavity, and deep mouth/teeth lines of the plastic mold.
  3. Use a toothpick to gently nudge the dark chocolate into any tight corners.
  4. The Golden Rule: Gently tap the mold flat on your counter 2–3 times to release trapped air bubbles.
  5. Place the mold in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 minutes until the dark accent layer is completely firm to the touch.

Step 2: Cool Your Base Chocolate

  1. Melt your white chocolate in short 20-second bursts, stirring thoroughly each time.
  2. Crucial Temp Check: Let the white chocolate sit on the counter for a few minutes until it is fluid but barely warm to the touch. If you pour hot white chocolate over hardened accents, it will remelt the dark detail and turn your skulls gray!

Step 3: Fill, Stick, and Set

  1. Pipe or gently spoon the cool white chocolate into each cavity, filling it about three-quarters full.
  2. Place your lollipop stick into the mold channel, pressing it down into the chocolate. Rotate the stick 180 degrees so it gets fully coated in chocolate for a secure grip.
  3. Spoon a bit more white chocolate over the stick to cover it completely and fill the cavity flush to the top.
  4. Tap the mold firmly on the counter to level the back and force any remaining air bubbles to the surface.
  5. Refrigerate for 10 to 15 minutes.

Step 4: Unmold and Package

  1. Once the bottom of the mold looks slightly translucent and the chocolate has fully contracted, flip the mold over a clean sheet of parchment paper.
  2. Gently tap the top of the cavities; the lollipops will drop out effortlessly with razor-sharp, factory-smooth details!
  3. Slide each lollipop into a clear cellophane bag, tie it off with ribbon, and clip on your printable Seasonally Speaking spooky tag.

Pro-Tips for Success

Avoid Water at All Costs: Ensure your mold, piping bags, and utensils are 100% dry. Even a single drop of water will cause your chocolate to seize into a grainy clump.

Removing Air Bubbles: Tapping the mold on the counter after adding the accent layer is essential—otherwise, your skulls will end up with tiny air pockmarks on the nose or eye rims.

Storage: Keep these at cool room temperature ($65^\circ\text{F} – 70^\circ\text{F}$). Do not store them long-term in the fridge after unmolding, or condensation will form on the chocolate surface when brought out.
